A modern gentleman’s date night wardrobe should communicate effort, confidence, sophistication and authenticity without looking like you’re trying too hard. The best outfits balance timeless menswear with modern tailoring, appropriate fabrics and seasonal comfort. The biggest mistake many men make is either overdressing (looking like they’re headed to a wedding) or underdressing (hoodie and sneakers) for a nice dinner date. 2. Wear Rich Colours: Stick to masculine, traditional colours. Excellent choices would be navy, charcoal, olive, camel, burgundy, chocolate brown, black, white, cream, forest green. Avoid loud neon colours or large graphic logos.
3. Textures: A good choice of textures like merino wool, cashmere, suede, linen, tweed, flannel, knit polos, corduroy ultimately creates depth without being flashy.

Seasons come into play and dictate the best selection. A suggested breakdown for all 4 seasons of the year in the Greater Vancouver area for a casual restaurant date, whether it’s a first date or a married couple date.

Summer Date Night: 
A summer date: keep it simple and comfortable; for example, a white linen button-down shirt with either short sleeves or rolled sleeves up. Why white? Because white reflects heat while linen gives an effortless Mediterranean elegance. For trousers Chino’s either navy or beige colours. Why? Because they’re lighter than jeans, and I believe they instantly help elevate your appearance. Shoes go with brown or suede loafers, or white leather minimalist sneakers. Avoid running shoes, flip-flops, and hiking sandals. I like to match my accessories, like a brown leather belt to match your shoes, and if you have a watch option, choose the brown leather strap rather than a black strap or even a nice stainless steel watch. If you want to finish off your wardrobe with a jacket, go with a lightweight blazer; navy, light tan, or a light grey will work, and in a linen fabric as it will help with the heat while still maintaining the look you want. For the finishing touch, a fragrance that offers a fresh aroma is citrus, bergamot, vetiver or light woods. Avoid all overpowering scents in hot weather.

Fall Date Night:
For the fall date, it is honestly the best season for menswear. The textures and colours naturally create depth. Your fall colours to work with are camel, olive, rust, chocolate brown, navy, and charcoal. The top should be a dark turtleneck or Oxford shirt. For warmer fall weather, you could layer your shirt with a sport coat like a brown or grey herringbone tweed jacket; for cooler weather, go with a waxed jacket or bomber jacket, and during dinner, remove the jacket. For the pants, go with dark jeans or wool trousers; shoes should be a brown colour like a Chelsea boot, suede chukkas, or a brown leather wingtip dress shoe. Some great choices for fragrances for fall are very light fragrances that are woody and warm spicy. Avoid the overpowering colognes.

Winter Date Night:
Winter allows for elegant layering. Your top shirt or sweater is the same as fall; go with a turtleneck or white oxford shirt. If you choose to wear a white shirt, pair it with a cashmere crewneck or V-neck sweater, and pair it with a wool navy blazer or sport coat. You will also need an overcoat jacket in winter, so go with an overcoat that is either camel, navy, or charcoal colour. A tailored overcoat instantly elevates almost any outfit. For pants, select wool trousers, dark chinos or dark denim. Shoes: leather Chelsea boots or an Oxford dress shoe work best. For accessories, add a cashmere scarf or leather gloves. Fragrances go with light woody & amber, spicy warm, and forest & resin will work well. In winter, I tend to stay away from the more citrus scents that I wear in the warmer weather months.

Spring Date Night:
For the spring date, go with a buttoned-down shirt, dark trousers, chinos or jeans in olive or brown earth colours, and pair with a blazer or sport coat in dark brown or olive. Where only leather dress shoes; avoid do not wear suede because of rain and scattered showers that will destroy anything suede. If the weather looks unpredictable, I suggest wearing a trench coat to help keep your outfit dry from walking in and out of the rain. Also, a trench coat signals a bit of confidence and maturity and will also help elevate casual outfits and has a romantic, cinematic quality which can subtly add character to your appearance. For fragrances in spring, go with fresh and slightly sensual fragrances something that feels lighter than the heavy winter scents. Get back to citrus, soft woods, and subtle sweetness.
